I used to hear the words “superfood smoothie” and roll my eyes so hard and you should have seen my face when I was told that it would be one of the best things I did for my health. I’m pretty sure I laughed out loud. Now, I drink one every day and post frequently on my Instagram about how much I love them. I even make superfood treats with my Shakeology!

This week is Shake Week! It’s where we share our love of all things Shakeology. I’m not writing this post to try and sell you on Shakeo, just to share all of the amazing things it’s done for me and all of the great ingredients it’s made of!

Um, Superfoods?

Ok, so superfood isn’t a totally recognized term, but it basically means a food is crazy packed with nutrients. There are several in Shakeology and several more that make great additives!

Is it a protein shake?

I’ve tried a lot of protein shakes in the past, so I was very skeptical when first presented with this, but shakeo isn’t a protein shake. It’s a blend of vitamins, superfoods, minerals, pro & prebiotics, digestive enzymes, and adaptogens designed to promote health inside and out.

A lot of people have also asked me if it’s a weight loss shake – you know, like the kind Slimfast makes? It isn’t. It’s true that many people do see some weight loss when they start Shakeology, but that’s primarily because so many people start it at the same time they start a new nutrition or exercise program. Of course, when you fuel your body with clean, more nutritious foods that are low in sugar and start working out 4-6 times a week, you’ll get a drop in weight.

That isn’t to say Shakeology should be counted out when starting a new program. It has the nutrients of six salads (yes, six!), so it’s vital in getting all of the nutrients your body needs on a daily basis.

So, it’s really that healthy?

Yes! It really is!

Most people are nutritionally deficient and Shakeology is an easy, delicious way to get your nutrients in. I’m a huge believer in supplementation, so once I started learning more about the various things in shakeo, I knew it was perfect for me. It’s a great fit for people that don’t eat a lot of fruits and veggies.

Matcha is all the rage; I’m sure you’ve seen it all over Instagram and in various tea and coffee shops. Matcha is a powdered green tea leaves packed with potent phytonutrients. It’s amazing and it helps boost brainpower and increases energy. And it’s included in Shakeology.

Shakeology also includes changa – a woody mushroom that has SO many adaptogens – that helps the body adapt and better respond to stress and sacha inchi – a superfood from Peru.

But does it taste good?

That’s honestly up to you!

When I first started drinking Shakeology, I tried the Whey Vanilla and I hated the flavor. So I tried the Whey Chocolate and thought it was eh, okay. But that Cafe Latte? Match made in Heaven! I recently switched to Vegan Cafe Latte because I’m lactose intolerant and keeping the dairy in my diet to a minim right now.

It took me about three months before my taste buds adjusted and I began to like Shakeology in it’s most basic form (shaken with ice and water). However, I still prefer recipes that add in extra flavors and ingredients. My go-to is 8 oz plant milk, 4 oz cold brew, caramel extract (I don’t measure it most of the time), half a banana, and ice. Tastes exactly like a caramel frapp without any of the nasty fillers and minus the high price tag.

You might be curious why it took so long for me to like just the flavor of Shakeo when so many people love it right away. The answer is simple! I had so much sugary, high processed foods in my diet that something that was naturally sweet just wasn’t sweet enough.

It’s changed my life.

I started drinking Shakeology in January 2018. However, I didn’t drink it every day until about April.

Since drinking it regularly, my immune system has been the best it’s been in years. Like, 10+ years. I spent December 2017 sick literally ever day. Not my normal, chronic illness sick either. I had a cold the entire month and called off work more times than I went in. I was miserable. Flash forward to December of 2018 and I didn’t get a cold or the flu once, despite everybody around me getting both of them.

Even my chronic illness symptoms have been better. Do I think Shakeology will or can cure my chronic illness? Lol – no. But fueling my body with dense, superfood nutrition every day (even on days where the rest of my food is junk) has helped my body recover from bad days quicker and given my body a more stable platform to exist on.

Other benefits I’ve noticed include stronger nails, healthier hair, brighter skin, and less random cravings.

I have my shakeo every morning with breakfast. When I’m in a hurry, I toss in a fiber filled carb and some cauliflower rice to make it a complete, filling meal. When I’ve got plenty of time, I pair it with baked sweet potatoes and carrots. I love having a consistent breakfat option that I know is going to fill me up.

When I’ve got a long day, I take a half scoop with me and mix it up as part of an afternoon snack. I also love, love, love to make treats with my Shakeology, including mug cakes and my personal favorite – Shakeology peanut butter cups!

  1. Great post! I really like your breakdown of everything. I’ve done BeachBody for years and have a bag of chocolate shake-o sitting in my pantry right now. It’s honestly not my favorite, but I am my healthiest when I drink it. I love your comment that it is what you make it; I always try to keep it basic, and that’s probably where my issues lie. I also do need to make a switch to vegan! Thanks for sharing! 🙂
